What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It is the process of changing your content and design to comply with what the search engines are looking for. Often times SEO is seen as being manipulative. Everyone thinks their content is the best available on a topic, but search engines see things differently. SEO is the process of making the search engines believe that your content is the best content available on the internet for a given topic. SEO is a complicated balance of many techniques and their interaction with search engine algorithms.

What SEO is NOT

SEO is not spam! SEO does not mean paying a company a small fee to create thousands of “backlinks” to your site. Links are only one part of the ranking algorithm, and the search engines are smart. They can detect these poor SEO tactics. SEO is not about manipulating the algorithm or tricking the search engines into ranking your content. Short sited and spammy techniques are considered Black Hat in the SEO world and A Touch of Technology does not use any of these tactics.

But I've Heard SEO is Dead!

SEO is by no means dead, nor will it be in the near future. The process of SEO is always evolving and certain aspects of SEO have little or no value any more. Some things that worked five years ago no longer benefit your SEO campaign. Examples of this include keyword stuffing and hidden content. Years ago, the search engines ranked sites higher that included more instances of the keyword you were searching for. Some sites even included text that was not visible to users, but was visible to search engines to get more occurrences of the keywords. Search engines have gotten smarter and realize when sites are using these techniques.
